'Provided by Inlet.net comments@inlet.net How to create and install your own MP3 Music Tones to a Motorola V400 Cell Phone. This procedure may work with other cell phones but I can only test what I own. There are two methods to accomplish this. Method one is to create the MusicTone and post it on a WEB site for download via the built in WEB browser. Method two is to create the MusicTone and use a USB Data cable and sync software to transfer it directly to the V400. How To Create the MP3 MusicTone: 1. Download and install the Free Audacity Editor. Do not change default settings. http://download.com.com/3000-2170-10058117.html 2. Download and install the Lame MP3 Encoder. Do not change default settings. http://www.mp3-tech.org/software/encoders/lamewin32.exe 3. Start Audacity and Click on File, then Preferences. 4. Goto the "File Formats" Tab. 5. In the MP3 Export Setup box click on Find Library. Say yes to Locate the Lame Encoder. 6. Browse to the directory where Lame is installed. "C:\Program Files\Lame" is the default. 7. Click on the lame_enc.dll file and click on open. 8. In the MP3 Export Setup box change the bit rate to 64. 9. Click on OK. You are now ready to start creating your own MusicTones. I haven't worked with anything but MP3 files yet so if your source file is not already MP3 format you'll need to convert it or figure out how to use the Audacity import function yourself. Click on File, then Open. Browse to the MP3 file you want to create the ring tone from and click Open. Click and Drag the mouse across the section of audio you want to be your MusicTone. This will take some practice. You may want to cut out the portion of the audio you don't want. To cut away parts you do not want Click and Drag to highlight the section to remove and then click edit and Cut. Keep editing the audio until your left with just the section you want or you are able to accurately highlight the part you want. Your MusicTone should be no more then 30 Seconds long!! However, ~10 Seconds seems to be the best choice. If the Audio left in Audacity is just what you want Click on File and Export as MP3. If you want just a portion of the Audio then Highlight that portion and Click on File and Export Selection as MP3. Enter a Filename to save the MP3 as. The filename MUST be Short! No Long Filenames and No strange characters. I'd stick with the 8.3 naming convention if I were you. Click on OK In the ID3 Tag box that appears you may enter a Title, Artist, Album, Track, Year, Genre and Comments if you want but leave the Format set to ID3v2. Click on OK. The ideal MP3 file size for a 10 Second ringer is about 100k. If your file is ~10 seconds and is bigger then ~100k you forgot to change the bit rate in MP3 export preferences. And the file will not work on the V400. 64 is the only bit rate that worked for me. Ok Your MusicTone is Ready!! Now you need to get it into the phone. This is where the 2 different methods come in to play. Method one is via a WEB site and method two is via a USB Cable. Method One How To: Next you need to copy the file to a WEB site that supports PDA access. A PDA WEB site isn't that hard to Create. My PDA WEB Page created in FrontPage looks like this.. ========================================================================== Ring Tones

Download Ring Tones

Jimmy Buffett - Fins

========================================================================== Why is my page so plane and simple you may ask. Its cuz we pay for Cell WEB access by the number of bytes downloaded!!! The simpler the page the less cost. Want to see this page from your Cell or from your computer? Goto http://www.inlet.net/pda Once the MP3 file is posted on a WEB site you simply browse to that site with your phones WEB browser and select the link. (Read the owners manual on how to operate the WEB browser.) I used the option Goto URL on my V400. The V400 will start the download by itself. When the download is complete the V400 will ask if you want to save the file. One of your save choices will be a RingTone. After selecting RingTone the Incoming Call ringer will be automatically set to your MP3. If you wish to use the RingTone for a specific caller you will need to change the settings. Since the MP3 is now in your phone you can read how to change the Ringer in your owners manual. If you did not set the MP3 export correctly in Audacity at the end of the download process a message will briefly appear on the phone that says unrecognized file format and the screen will return to the browser without asking you to save it. End of Method One How To Method Two How To: I currently do not have a USB cable for my V400. When I get my cable I'll update this section. But I'm reading DO NOT BUY THE RADIO SHACK CABLE. or any cable that has the inline filter. Allot of posts say cables with inline filters are causing problems. The rest is up to you. Enjoy!
